This was such a different style of post-apocalyptic that I was almost unsure of where it would go. It was an intriguing concept and I really felt connected to all the characters. It was refreshing to have a main character that wasn’t perfect but still tried anyways, and to see the way he navigated a world that he barely even understood.

YA indigenous dystopian fiction, a queer father figure, and a dash of teenage romance at the end of the world. Or is it just the beginning? Our dreams are what give us hope, and no one can truly take that from us.

Sure the writing and dialogue is YA, but the plot and world are very adult. It's fiction, but the trauma is all based on reality. Nothing felt inserted just for dramatic effect. Every reference to global warming, residential schools, missing and murdered indigenous women, etc., Gave the narrative a truth.
In our current world, the broader questions of what it means to survive and who are you willing to step on to do it could not be more relevant.
