The world that Dimaline crafts in The Marrow Thieves is not just the future, but also the past and the present. It plays well on current climate anxieties and adeptly draws on the realities of past trauma inflicted on Indigenous people by instruments of colonial violence to create a dystopian future that feels plausible. It portrays the deep well of strength that individuals can draw on when their main focus needs to be almost entirely on survival. It is YA lit though, so I found some of the interpersonal drama uninteresting and too simplified, but I still felt moments of emotional investment.

I personally loved this book, and the storyline was amazing. However, there are a few things I wish had been done differently. Some of the characters felt underdeveloped, and I really wanted to learn more about the side characters’ stories. And seriously why did it end the way it did? It could’ve been longer! I need to see more from Miig and Isaac.

Such a lovely book. I don’t read much dystopian stuff but this is definitely one of my favorites. I read this alongside with the audiobook and it was so cool how there was changes in Frenchie’s voice as he went through some very traumatic moments. I feel like the ending really tied it all together & made me cry!! I also feel that unlike some dystopian books that make me feel even more depressed, the characters actively helping one another made it feel more hopeful. Will definitely get my own copy & re-read! <3
