Very very poetic and beautifully written, I cried multiple times
Really enjoyed this book even tho it smh took me over a month to finish it.

the ending really surprised me like I did NOT see that coming. Therefore I had to finish The last third of the book in one sitting.

SYNOPSIS:
  • In a desolate, small town, the reader gets to know the narrator. Is the narrator actually a mermaid or out of her mind?
  • Unnamed narrator believes she is a mermaid. Her father, who walked into the sea & was never seen again, told her she was a mermaid.
  • She falls in love with an older man, Jude, who is a veteran. Jude suffers from PTSD & alcoholism.

MY THOUGHTS
  • Wow, this one blew me away.
  • A short (roughly 200 pgs), bleak read.
  • Lyrical & poetic writing.
  • Themes: unrequited love, coping mechanisms, grief, obsessive love, inability to process trauma, abandonment by a parent.
  • Excellent character development.
  • Told in 1st person POV.
  • Atmospheric and can easily visualize the setting.
  • Loved the author’s incorporation of words & the characters’ interest in language, definitions, and word choice.
  • Felt really connected to the narrator. Readers can really feel how isolated and alienated she feels.
  • I enjoyed the side characters, especially the grandfather.

TL;DR: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️beautifully written + amazing story. only 200 pgs; super quick read.

There were some bits in here that I really loved. One chapter blew me away. And a dozen sentences felt like love notes just for me.
But overall, either some litfic is just a bit too much up its own ass for my tastes or... This wasn't that good. Maybe both.

Such an interesting book! I originally picked this up because I thought it was a short fantasy read, but it's actually a deep work of literary fiction. To be honest, my head is still swimming (no pun intended) with all the symbolism that I probably missed on this first read through. At times, I felt like I was back in high school English class, trying to decode "Flowers for Algernon". I haven't annotated a book in a while, but a few chapters in I realized I needed to for this book. The unreliability of our unnamed narrator, who may or may not be a mermaid, made everything in this book a secret message. Some general themes that I picked up on:
  • Wanting a love so bad that it twists you/changes who you are
  • Not knowing who you are in the absence of someone else (here, the narrator's father)
  • Duty versus desire
