Well written account of a story that doesn't need much extra effort to heighten the suspense. Was so glad to read that the CG36-500 has been restored, and this story of courage and selflessness is being kept alive.

Good story but difficult to understand some of the lingo if you're unfamiliar with boat and nautical terms.
As a former Coast Guardsman, this book really touches home. It makes me remember why I did what I did, not for the accolades that come with a job well done or life saved, but just because that’s what we did. I completely understand where Bernie Webber was coming from when he hated the praise because that was just part of the job. For once a movie does do justice to the story.
A great true story about heroic men, just poorly delivered. The approach is very dry and seems like cobbled together newspaper clippings more than anything. The author did not do this true account justice.
What an amazing story. Two tankers break in half off the coast of Cape Cod during a horrible storm in 1952, and a bunch of Coast Guard lifeboats and cutters make daring rescue attempts to save as many people as possible. Soon to be a movie, but I decided to read the book instead. Usually, this type of subject is not my cup of tea, but I liked the way the story was filled in with nautical and regional history. I'm not sure I had a clear picture of some of the events (I cannot tell aft from port from whatever), but the intensity and enormity of the situation came through in the writing. These are brave men whose valiant actions should not be forgotten.

I read this book because I had seen the Chris Pine movie “The Finest Hours.” I really liked it and wanted to learn more. The book was engaging but once they stopped talking about the rescue and started dealing with the afterwards, then it got slow and a little boring.
