this was probably the hardest book for me to get through. the writing is absolutely amazing, very readable while also beautiful. i really appreciated how this book didn't shy away from the details of the main topic, no matter how disgusting they are. while it was so hard to read, it also made the characters more human. this book definitely makes you think, especially about the differences between neil and brian, and how they both dealt with what happened to them, and how it affected them when they grew older.
there were a lot of parts that annoyed me, mainly surrounding neil, but everything was also very real. none of the characters were perfect, and it humanized the story. eric was my favorite, i related to him a lot.
this was such a rough read, and it's weird to say that i loved it, but i know i'll think about it for a long time, and that's what made it such a great book to me.

Words cannot do justice to this book. It may just be the most difficult book I've ever read, and I had to put it down several times. It deals with a horrifying topic (child sexual abuse) in a way that is very frank and probably triggering for many people, so it's not for everyone.

All of that said, if you can stand to read it, you absolutely should. It's hard to praise a book like this because it's not an easy book to get through, but the writer knows his craft. It's a distinctly Midwestern story, and the level of detail about the Kansas landscape is extraordinary. The way the characters develop and grow over the coarse of the story is also brutally realistic.

Because of it's subject matter, I would hesitate to say this is one of my favorite books. But on a list of books that will stick with me and have affected me on a deeply personal level, this would most certainly be near the top.
