Wow oh wow; I don't know where to begin.

Mysterious Skin tells us the story of Neil McCormick and Brian Lackey and the summer that Brian can't remember and Neil can't forget.

I picked up this book because I remember the first time I saw the 2004 film starring Joseph Gordon Levitt. Ever since I've saw, the story of Neil McCormick and Brian Lackey has stuck with me. It was the first film, that I remember watching, that didn't shy away from the more disturbing truth of reality.

As I started reading the source material: I learned about the even harsher reality that Neil and Brian go through. We learn more about Neil's childhood and his relationship with his mother. While I didn't like the mother character, there were moments where I did love how Neil described his relationship with his mother. The scene about the jukebox especially has a special place in my heart.

With the book being in both Brian and Neil's point of view, the reader is actively reading and learning how trauma actively affects us all differently. Mysterious Skin is not for everyone; but for those that do choose to read it; it'll be a story that's imprinted on your mind for days, months and even years to follow

I for sure thought Mysterious Skin was going to have a happy ending with closure. I accidentally believed this to be a thriller since I was so invested in discovering what happened with Brian. But, nope. All I got was open endedness and sadness.

Not to say that Mysterious Skin wasn't good. Just the opposite. I was very invested in Neil and Brian as well as their relationships. The novel had multiple POVs, fleshing out the two MCs even more. I found myself cheering for them because they had people to rely on.

What really got to me was the tender moments that Neil experienced towards the end as he comforted Brian and how Brian became more raw. It was so satisfying to see their growths here. Beware of any of the mature explicit scenes! I had to skip a few pages because it just got a little too intense.

4/5 B -
