The following were my thoughts prior to reading the book.
-Pre-Read thoughts: based on the summary on back cover.
Sounds like something happened and one boy probably not able to cope with the events either due to fear or trauma his young mind decides to repress the events; on the other hand Neil remembers it well could it be that the event or events for him weren't traumatic but memorable?
I began reading his book on my commute to work, as to the why I can’t de all my reason for picking the book up, but on this end of the book in glad I did. I had a working theory shortly I to the book that Brian would be helped but Neil come to terms with what had happened in his missing 5 hours. Was I correct yes and no, my thought was that will would help him coupe, where Brian did that himself gradually over the course of the book; Neil just filled in the gaps. Some where in the middle Brian goes elbow deep into a dead call and has flashbacks, up until this point I was under the impression the coach was just a diddler, this had me thinking “oh no the coach was into that freaky ish.” Which my theory on that was correct Brian had done the same with the coach.
This book was an interesting read as it showed how two people experience the same event differently where one boy saw this as a memorable experience the other traumatized by it had repressed it for 10 years. At the end of this book I was left with 2 burning questions and they could be simplified into the singular question
“Did the parents know what had been going on?”

For the record, I haven’t seen the movie, so all of my opinions are based on the book.
Genuinely upsetting and visceral book, but beautifully told. Each narrator has a strong voice and the atmosphere is palpable. It has a hopeful ending. Despite it all, I loved spending time with these characters.

Phenomenal. I felt like I grew up with these boys in the span of 3 days (which was exactly how quickly I read this book bc it was actually incredible.)
