An enjoyable read, exposing the quirks and eccentricities of Holmes: his restlessness at the lack of crime constituting a paradoxical moral compass, an ability to separate cases from personal without any emotional overlap, and a penchant for music of the middle ages.

The case itself gradually unravels in a gripping way, revealing the way the government papers are stolen and the body disposed.

Watson is a fairly passive figure, a subject the story is recounted to, there is little suggestion of his character beyond his intellectual inferiority compared with Holmes.

Overall, a quick and engaging read both in terms of character and plot.

I think this might be my favourite short story so far. It hits all the notes of what you want a Sherlock Holmes mystery to be (and im usually a fan of the more supernatural leaning later stories).
