A creepy and interesting read - it is a monster story... but the question is, who is REALLY the monster??

I enjoyed the many nods and discussions of classic monster tales and the whole childhood "monster club" was giving me nostalgia for some serious 80s childhood monster movie vibes. So many brilliant moments that tied back to Mary Shelley & Frankenstein which was a nice touch. The twists were a healthy mix of a few "saw that coming" moments and a few "woah" moments.... overall pretty good in my opinion.

I did think this dragged a bit at times and maybe could've done with around 75+ pages shaved off.

3.8 rounded up!

The ending fell a little flat and I was going to 3 star it, but it redeemed itself a little on the last page.

I usually dislike thrillers & horror because it always ultimately becomes people doing horrible things to other people. I like ghost stories and monster stories. Humans are boring.

But this one... this one was really good.

I'll start with the negative: the descriptions are so bland....... dont love hearing the mc talk about her 173737 degrees and 42069 tv shows and podcasts for 10 pages. The author somehow manages to describe every single environment in the most boring way possible.

it's kind of a double edged sword because it gets overwhelming, and bland, but it's also very obvious that the younger versions of the characters sees things in a more colorful magical whimsical light than the older versions of the characters, and the author does a really good job of skewing the viewpoints-- but also I don't need to know, every time, what color the pine trees were.

Honestly, the biggest fallacy of this book is keeping a baby cottontail alive. Lord.

You ever get a real nauseating feeling right before something horrific and terrible happens? not even, like, gory, but something incredibly sad and twisted? yeah that was me through the first 100 pages.

It really picks up in the middle, though, and you spend most of it on the edge of your seat-- or at least I did. The plot twist? Beautiful. The catharsis? So satisfying. Finding out Eric was a little rat bitch the entire time? Worth it.

Highly recommend for all fans of thrillers and mystery. So good to finally see people get what they deserve.

This novel was a pretty good reimagining of Frankenstein and really delivered on several elements to make this an engaging read. The character development throughout the story was great, and you really started to learn why they acted the way they did and felt a connection with them the longer you got into the story. The two-narrator set-up was great as well to present all the relevant information you needed in a format that helped the story progress in a nice, steady pace up until the big reveal in the second act of the story (more on that later).

The way the story was written was well researched and cohesive, as well as easy to follow along with the events of the story. I felt that the pacing of the novel was also really well done, and it wasn't rushed and didn't leave any questions unanswered for me.

The biggest "gripe" I have with this novel is the ending. Yes, it was not what I was expecting,g and the story was wrapped up fully, but it also left me wanting just a bit more, and I wasn't completely satisfied.
