The Children on the Hill is a monster book about three kids being kids, pretending to hunt monsters. But they realize that monsters aren’t always big, scary cryptids with sharp teeth that go bump in the night. A monster is indeed among them. Time jumping in a book it’s hard to do successfully, but Jennifer masterfully curates an experience that unfolds in a perfect symphony of sorrow, friendship and empowerment in the end, ethically challenging the reader to redefine, “monster.”

Pros:
A great exploration of what makes a monster. It isn’t completely subtle but does have layers to pick through.
Cons:
It might just be that I wasn’t in the mood for this book but it didn’t cause a lot of feeling and I don’t think I will remember specifics for long. It wasn’t bad, I just felt like I was predicting things and the way they were revealed was less exciting than I hoped.

Wasn't liking the writing/narrator, not into the historical fiction
3.5 stars
I enjoy dual timeline stories and how they come together in the end. Jennifer McMahon's writing kept me engaged with the story and I wanted to know what happened next.
