Wow. Honestly while I was enjoying the book I would say I wasn't completely blown away by it until the plot twist that happened about 80% in. I have never read the original book by Mark Twain so I can't say how accurate or faithful this retelling/re-imaging is but I was really invested in James story and all the "adventures" he got up to.

This was a very moving book. I fell in love with the characters and was cheering and crying for them! The audio was fantastic.

I loved this reimagining of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn! Some of the basic plot elements and events are still there, but the enslaved Jim has been reinvented. His perspective provides an interesting, and sometimes funny, twist to the story. Excellent narration in the audiobook!

James by Percival Everett it is a reimagining of Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn told from the runaway slave Jim’s perspective. It basically follows the events of Twain’s story before diverging in the later half and is a startling good mix of funny and heart breaking and hopeful and horrifying. I absolutely loved it and if I read a better 2024 release I will be pleasantly surprised.
