I forgot how much I enjoyed this one! It is comparable to THE ETERNITY CODE, in my opinion, though I think it’s not quite at the same level in my heart of hearts.
Opal is so excellently wicked and I love the building anticipation of our beloved characters coming together again for another adventure after what was supposed to be the last one. There’s a bit more of a sense of foreboding in this book than the others—it really makes you wonder, is it going to turn out alright this time?
There’s one moment when Artemis is in a very desperate spot, and he sees Butler, and he just immediately feels safe. And I just thought that was so beautiful. Maybe not to someone who hasn’t followed their journey through the last three books, but especially after THE ETERNITY CODE, how could you not feel some tears coming on?
THE LOST COLONY is the last book in the series I’ve read, and I remember it being not quite as good as my favorites, but not bad either. We’ll see. But it was such a delight to realize THE OPAL DECEPTION lived up to my favorite book before it.

I read this book way back in highschool and it has stuck with me like most of the series. It's one of my favorites alongside the Lost Colony and the Time Paradox. Holly and Artemis' relationship remains a core part of the series for me, second only to Artemis' relationship with Butler. Opal as an antagonist never ceases to be as entertaining as it is unhinged.

I liked this entry in the series pretty well. The twist of Artemis and Butler having their minds wiped and being reintroduced into the fairy world was a clever way to make things fresh again, but even with Artemis growing a conscience in this book, I still am not especially attached to him or the other characters. I'm not sure if it is the style of the writing or the type or character, but I just don't find myself that invested in what happens in these books.

I was laughing so hard because of Opal, the poor pixie lost her power and granted herself manual labor.
