I found it a really difficult read. Though I wasn’t personally affected by bullying at school the passages detailing the bullying and physical violence were really upsetting for me, I’d been reading it on and off for months for this reason. I’m glad I’ve read it, but it will be a long time if ever before I pick it up again.

i thought this was gonna be a 5 star read for most of the book, but then it got sad and i realised i’ve never been one to enjoy a sad book/film etc. Literally no fault of the book i still thought it was fantastic, I love books that are dark but not so much *sad*. I thought the writing was brilliant, especially how it was so flawlessly written in a teenager’s voice.

Such a tender exploration of pain and suffering, free will and empathy. The writing was sparse but exact and unflinching. The description of violence were so painful to read, but the author never relyed on graphic details or gore for shock value.
The characters were realistic and well-developed, Momose's character managed to creep me throughly with just one scene.

There were some element of magical realism\train-of-though-visions in the panultimate chapter, which you encounted sometimes in japanese literature (specificaly reminded me of the ending of Neon Genesis Evangelion) and I don't necessarily love, I felt like it was too disjointed, but it was just a small bit.

a tragic story of two bullied kids living in Tokyo, communicating through letters and sharing their trauma which leads to them forming an inevitable bond.
it was hard for me to get through this book, but only because it touches on a heavy topic.
the writing style was fast-paced and easy to read, but as the book had many descriptive scenes that made me physically sick, i had to take breaks from reading it. but that might be just that I am a really sensitive person to scenes and descriptions involving blood and violence.
the book touches on the philosophy of existentialism, mental health, depression, and the hardships of growing up. Mieko´s writing style describes the ache and tragedy of the story with precision and a sense of detail. it will not fail to touch your heart and you are most likely to become melancholic or depressed even from reading it. the writer´s ability to describe the emotions and mental state of a bullied person with disturbing authenticity is undoubtable.
