Longlisted for this year's International Booker Prize, I found this to be a compelling take on a very familiar story of bullying amongst schoolchildren. Kawakami captures the intensity of her two main characters who find themselves trapped in a world they can't control and the strangeness of their thinking. There's also a kind of sweetness and purity amidst the brutality.

3.8 maybe.

Loved it , beautiful translation , also it was sad , this book really made me think about my teen years and it made me reaffirm my empathy before doing or saying anything hurtful to anyone
