there's nothing particularly outstanding about this book, but it's a nice world to be in for a while. I did like the hopeful ending.

honestly was not really into this one. the romance was built on nothing and i think i prefer the worldbuilding in her other novels. glad i read it bc im trying to complete the hainish set but i probably won’t reread or think about this one again lol

I seem to be doomed to read old sf paperback series in the wrong order. A doom that haunted me since childhood.

Anyway, I realized quickly the last Le Guin I read, "City of Illusion" was a sequel to this! Now that book makes more sense. :D

This book stands on its own better, with its own themes to resolve outside of the action plot, and it helps knowing that it'll all work out well after the bleak ending since I read the sequel. :P

It's still terribly patriarchal, as it had to be... written in 1960... so yeah, the women are all in helper roles and the focus is on men, with one willful ingenue whose main role is to captivate the male main character with her alien eyes... but she is a fully-realized character, this IS Ursula, after all.

Not to be sexist, but I'm finding random old trade paperbacks more fun when they are written by women. They manage to be gentler products of their time.

World building is great but women characters are flat, aligning too closely with the submissive native woman stereotype. Male protagonist has very little characterization going for him either. Reversing skin tones and power structures doesn't erase the Pocahontas vibes this one gave me.

They can't all be "the best book about anarchists on the moon you're ever going to read," you know? Definitely a step up from the first book in this series (but you don't have to read them in order -- which has made shuffling through my library holds that much easier!).

Eski inceleme:

A solid short novel. I really enjoyed the world and I think I’m still early in my Sci fi journey to give an accurate rating. Took me a bit to get into it, but glad I read it
