I backed up Franz Potter's Literary Mushrooms Kickstarter Project in which he re-published Gothic Chapbooks of the Gothic era and received the first three books of the series.

This book in particular is a gothic tale about a mistress who gets endowed with a Lord against her better judgement. The Lord's royal family wants him to marry someone with wealth though and conflict ensues. We all know this story but that's okay. There is nothing ground-breaking literary here but from I learned about this project it isn't really supposed to be. These are the pop books that are similar to the mass-market paperbacks you see in the Supermarket and Newsstands nowadays. These chapbooks are the filth that the real Gothic people were reading and raving about. And with that in mind, I didn't mind the tropes.

I found it interesting. I usually don't have much patience for Gothic language but the short length of this piece forces the Author (whomever you are! the author's name has been lost with time) to get to the real characterization and conflict of this story quickly. I'm super excited to check what the other books in this Literary Mushrooms series are like. Fun, probably.

Tl;dr: This is a fun read and an interesting cultural look at the 1800s!
