I love this series. Have loved it from the beginning. And this is a very satisfying ending, wrapping up lots of the threads through the whole series.

Fuck the Elder Races, and their pompous claim to being enlightened, while using the Younger Races - people they describe condescendingly as "children" when it suits them, to be paternalistic - as cannon fodder in battles they can't be bothered to fight themselves.

I'm not going to go into a detailed review, because ... well, it's the wrap-up of an 8-book series. You either know you like it by now, or you haven't started. And if you haven't started, let me tell you, if sci-fi is your thing, this is a great one. Generally, I'm not super into the military-flavored sci-fi stories, because they feel a bit cold and impersonal to me... but that is not at all the case for this series. Also, while it has a grounding in tech, it doesn't bog down the narrative with pages and pages talking about how the tech works. So again, if sci-fi is your thing, do check it out.

This one was strange. The first half felt like it had been written by a completely different author, and then the second half or so snapped back together. I think this book tried to take on too many things at once and became a mess because of it - the rest of the series tended to focus on a very specific set of events. This book jumped from one setting to another and was less well done because of it. Still enjoyed the ending though.

10/13/2023 - liked this one better on the second read. Probably 5 stars.

If previous books in the series were movies, this one is a TV series with an overarching plot arc; chapters are loosely connected at first but come together in the service of a - reasonably - satisfying conclusion. Pretty much every recurring character left alive from earlier in the series shows up or gets a mention (General Morris! Captain Stedrin! The Silviss!). As usual, Humans First is not a particularly satisfying antagonist - some of their dastardry (is that a word?) happens much too quickly to make sense - and for most of the book the various "episodes" feel a little too episodic and unconnected. There is the usual introduction of a ton of new characters, but there is plenty of time for e.g. a focus on Alamber's coming-of-age (essentially) and Torin and Craig's continued relationship (which is, as usual, nicely unbreakable - the conflicts are external, they are very firmly each other's Person regardless of whatever else may be going on in the universe). The conclusion is a conclusion; the door is very definitely left open for continuing adventures but there is enough resolution that it doesn't seem ridiculous that this is The End.

I wasn't quite sure what to think about this one. I mean, its always great to get more Torin and crew, but some parts didn't quite jive with me. Maybe I am not ready for the series to be over. Plus the end was really silly.

This book was harder for me to get into. It felt almost like a collection of short stories that were all connected rather than one book. It definitely came together in the end, and I still liked it, it was just not as cohesive for me as the others have been. I definitely still recommend though.

Another great book in a favorite series that is still going strong. Supposedly this is the last Torin Kerr book, but I’m hoping it’s not - even if the emphasis shifts to more Warden Kerr or one of the secondary characters. Fingers crossed!

Love it.

Good end to the arc with some things left open that could lead into more books (Please!).

I love Torin a lot and could read a lot more with her. :)

Also, Alamber is pinging so many of my buttons. I think I need to re-read the book they met him. :)

This was a satisfying wrap-up to an excellent series. I’ll miss reading about Torin, Craig, Presit, Alamber, and the rest of the crew and hope that Huff one day will want to revisit their world.
