I do like George Orwell as a writer, however, I found this book a bit of a slog/struggle to get through.
It was interesting to read and see this from a perspective of a soldier, albeit not a factually correct one by historical standards. It was especially interesting to see the parts of the book where they were mainly waiting around/doing nothing while waiting for their orders.
It also gives an insight into the complexities of George Orwell's politics, as here we see the turning away from socialism in all names, into anti authoritarianism which he saw develop in Russia too.

Came into this read with zero knowledge of the Spanish civil war. I would recommend some preliminary reading to better understand the state of inter-political rivalries, though Orwell does a good job of explaining this at a high-level in the appendix. Would have also been helpful to understand how the war started in the first place. I enjoyed his reflections on the front and his interpretations of attitudes and changes in daily interactions throughout his time in Spain as the war went on. I found this overall very interesting and gave me a new perspective to better understand left-wing infighting.

This book was very mixed for me; I enjoyed some of his more reflective passages, as well as some of the details on the political context in the appendices. However, I found some of the descriptions incredibly boring and hard to push through, especially the trench warfare (even if this was partly the point), and had to switch to the audiobook in order to keep going

Started fantastic but became boring rather quickly. Once you've read about one battle, you've read them all with this book. Basically , the Spanish aren't very adept at war.
