Read as the first book of a book club I joined but has failed to actually organise it's first meeting so will probably never happen. Orwell!
Homage to Catalonia is a few mixed bag. There are moments that are thrilling and give you a real look into the messiness of revolution from many angles. However, there are also moments that drag the pacing to an absolute halt. We all know that Orwell is extremely political, but it seems that when writing about politics head on as opposed to writing them shrouded in allegory, metaphor and the fantastical he's a real bore. He even admits himself in the book that it's not something he really wants to be doing, and with good reason.
The memoir also has the problem of just petering out. Being a memoir, it was never going to follow the normal structure of a narrative, but the final 40 pages turn into a chore to finish.
But when it's good, it's fantastic. Orwell being in the frontline of this civil war is exciting, and his simplistic writing style lends to it well. It's a shame that the rest is a bit of a drag.

A very good book, that reports from the front of one of the most representative conflicts of the early 20th century and darkness it brought. An interesting read start to finish, but particularly the final two chapters are extremely gripping and remind of the fragility of democracy and the cost of losing it.
