This was an invaluable read for me. My grandfather, who fought in the war, died when I was only 3, so I could never ask him about it.
Orwell describes the absurdity of war, the complicated politics amongst factions who were technically on the same side but were prone to infighting, his personal journey through the battlefields and the down time, food scarcity, being gravely injured and surviving (just barely), and from time to time, complaints about how in Spain things tend to happen mañana. He's not wrong, although it seemed a little absurd to complain about how inefficiently the war was run.
If you're curious about where he got the inspiration to write 1984 and Animal Farm, this book should give you a better idea.

'Saluut aan Catalonië' is een flinke duik in het diepe voor wie, zoals ik, van tevoren niet bijzonder veel wist over de verschillende partijen binnen de Spaanse Burgeroorlog. Sommige momenten, beweegredenen en gebeurtenissen zijn daardoor soms wat lastig te volgen, Orwells aangenaame schrijfstijl leidt je daar zonder problemen doorheen. De Engelsman lijkt opvallend eerlijk, al moet dat nog blijken zodra ik een objectiever boek over dit conflict lees.
Zijn vele opmerkingen over de stereotype Spanjaard (hij klaagt opvallend vaak over "mañana, mañana") zijn erg grappig en nog steeds herkenbaar. De intriges van die tijd, net als de impliciete voorspellingen in zo'n historisch verslag, blijven fascinerend om op terug te blikken. In de loopgraven en in het gecensureerde Catalonië zelf zie je duidelijk waar hij inspiratie heeft opgedaan voor bijvoorbeeld 1984 - interessant om die lijnen zo terug te herkennen.

Someone recommended this to me after seeing me reading Man's Fate on a plane. Nice read. Not mind blowing but informative and interesting. a bit repetitive and boring at times but, well, Orwell's time in Spain was a bit boring and repetitive at times. so I suppose it makes sense.

De man van Animal Farm doet hier zijn belevenissen uit de doeken toen hij ging vechten in Spanje tegen Franco. Soms wordt ik na het lezen van zo'n verhaal getriggerd om me in de materie te verdiepen, maar ik heb nu niet de drang gevoeld om mijn kennis over de Spaanse burgeroorlog te vergroten.
