This is a great book. It’s also my first by Emily Freeman. I loved the format: short chapters that each close with a prayer and a practice.
As a stay-at-home mom who started seminary at 38, I related to her story of choosing to go back to school in a similar season of life, when it was unexpected and arguably didn’t make sense. For me, it was a long process of first wondering if it was okay to want it, then wondering if it was okay to actually do it until those wonderings and longings became a burning conviction that it was the right thing to do, the thing I was called to do.
Now that I am 6 credits from graduating, life in that arena has become a matter of simply doing the next right thing and trusting that it’s good be in the midst of a long obedience in the same direction.
Emily’s soulful meditations and practices are really helpful. Even if the truths and information itself is not new, the practice of walking though the book is definitely worthwhile.

Hard choices made with clarity
I loved going through this book and it came to me at the perfect time in my life. With a hard decision to make, this book provided biblical truths to help guide my communication with God. It helped show me that all my decision should be centered around God and provided practical and simple ways to make that a reality.

I loved this book! It was given to me by a friend that loves the podcast and assumed the book would be great also. I hadn’t heard the podcast before so I had no expectations on it, but I identified so much with the author. (I wonder if she’s an enneagram 6??) The chapters are short and the writing is well done. I didn’t have any big decisions that I was making, but the chapters just lend to a better life overall I think. Excellent book!

What can I say that Emily has not already said so eloquently, yet simply?
I have listened to Emily’s podcast from day one, regularly sending off episodes to friends and family. I have listened to some episodes multiple times. Now she has put some of those words into a hard bound form. The internet may be forever, but the written word has the power to change lives.
I had the delightful opportunity to read her book early and it is just as amazing. This book needs to be put in the hands of high school grads, college kids, the newly married, parents, empty nesters. Whatever stage of life you are in you are sure to find some nugget of wisdom that will propel you forward. Sometimes I feel more ready to tackle the laundry because of Do the Next Thing mindset. Other times I have dug into serious decisions with confidence because Emily has just the right word for the moment.
Do the next right thing now, and read this book. I know I will come back to this book over and over again, savoring it like my favorite chocolate.

I am thrilled that Emily has written a companion to her fantastic podcast so we have something tangible to take with us when those questions arise. I’m so glad that she followed her own advice and did the next right thing by writing the book. Your next right thing? Read it!
Re-read it March 2024 before reading her book How to Walk into a Room. Still good.
