The Next Right Thing: A Simple, Soulful Practice for Making Life Decisions
Emily P. Freeman
Emily P. Freeman has spoken peace into my chaos for years through her books, podcast, and blog. Her tag line, “creating space for your soul to breathe so you can discern your next right thing,” is more than just a marketing pitch. She has a way with words that speak truth through story, those which help us to find the meaning and purpose of our lives. I loved this book as much as the podcast on which it is based, and both have been my comforting companions as I seek my own next right thing.

This book is exactly what I needed in this exact minute. It is a perfect pairing with Don't Overthink It by Anne Bogel. I am officially pressing this into everyone's hands every day. Thank you.
I appreciated the short chapters and bit of practical advice on making decisions, although Freeman's approach is to take a more in-depth look at who you are, why you want or don't want to make decisions, and where God is through the process. Providing the hard questions to ask yourself is where Freeman shined, and I could tell that she has thought long and hard through a lot of decision-making advice and sincerely cares about helping people examine their motives and learn to trust God.
I didn't realize this was a Christian book going into it, but agreed with Freeman's emphasis on decision making as a part of spiritual growth. I tired quickly of the fluff and the cute but vague statements ("creating space for your soul to breathe," etc.) that weren't explained well and added nothing that helped move me toward a less anxious, more pointed frame for making life decisions. And even though there were applicable, useful parts, I often found the way she chose to illustrate her points to be scattered and wished she had chosen a more focused (or simple, as the subtitle says) method for getting her points across. (3.5 stars rounded up)

This is the kind of book that you want to hold on to for all the times you need perspective and help in life. Each chapter is short and to the point and each was inspiring and helpful. I listened to this but would like to get a hard copy to review various chapters as needed. A truly helpful, useful, and inspiring book for anyone looking for direction and uplift.
I love everything about this book, and feel like Emily is a dear friend after listening to her podcast every week. So glad I bought my copy of this one so I could mark it up and return to it again and again.
3.5 - I prefer the podcast. I switched to the audiobook halfway through.

I was thrilled to get my hands on Emily P. Freeman's newest book. In a world of loud, often angry people, it is great to hear from a quieter soul who speaks lovingly and encouragingly. Her book is full of practical strategies that the reader can implement immediately.
Her book makes remarks on the decision making process that I continue to ruminate over such as: "We make better decisions by making decisions, not by thinking about making decisions." Freeman also gently nurtures the reader to listen to their own voice and God's voice, before turning to other voices, which is important to consider in this digital age.
For me, the most helpful question she posed is one I want to remember to consider the next time an opportunity comes before me: "If you were in a room of people and this was called out into the crowd, would you raise your hand to volunteer for this?"

I love The Next Right Thing podcast and was thrilled to learn that Emily was writing a book. This book is about decision making and is full of concrete steps to guide you in the process. More than that, Emily writes about simple spiritual practices to help uncover the emotional roadblocks that can make decision making so difficult. Side note: I appreciate that Emily recognizes the privilege in being able to make your own decisions and that not everyone is in that position.

I nearly ran out of flags reading this one — it’s THAT good. I’ve had this one for months but it needed to be read right now, and I’m grateful for it. I savored this one (as it should be) and resonated deeply with her wise, warm way of inviting us all into a truer and better way of living, one grounded in Jesus and guided by love as we take little steps forward day by day. Hear me when I say that none of that is how I naturally live, but it is truly a gift to be reminded that such a way is not only possible, but actual doable. This book is a balm to weary and worn out souls, and it’s a gift I’ll treasure for years to come. (Chapter 8 alone was worth every penny!!)
