This is much more of a Christian-focused book than I was expecting, which is not an issue; just something to be aware of going in if you were looking for a more decision-making help book. I really enjoyed the mixture of real-life examples along with the spiritual overtones in how to choose the next step on your path.
I liked this in theory, because I enjoy Freeman’s podcast and I struggle with decision fatigue. But I’ve decided after reading 2 of her books that there’s something about Freeman’s writing that just doesn’t resonate with me like her speaking does.
It’s strange because I like listening to her podcast or hearing her in other interviews. But her writing just doesn’t grab me- I kept getting distracted and tuning out what I was reading. I would have to force myself to focus and not to skim.
There were a few lines that stood out as particularly compelling or insightful. But overall, I was disappointed that this wasn’t what I had hoped.
I wanted more practical application, and it seems to me there is a lot more of a religious focus here than in the podcast. Certainly, she does a prayer each week and some topics have more of a biblical connection than others. However, the book focused so much on God and religion, whereas I would have preferred a more diverse mix of ideas and practices.

Fantastic book. As someone who is often indecisive, scared of making the wrong choice, or has trouble discerning what I actually think, this book offered me freedom. I enjoyed the short chapters, prayers, and action points. It really can be read as a devotional. Highly recommend.
This book was timely for me. The reminders to create space and discern what I'm feeling in my soul as I make decisions was incredibly helpful. I'm walking away from this book armed with tools for finding peace and making space in my life.
The reason this book is 4 stars instead of 5 for me is that I found it to be a repeat of the podcast. Freeman states in the podcast that the idea of The Next Right Thing needed to be a podcast before it was a book, but I found most of what was included in the pages of this book to be a repeat of what I've already heard Freeman say in my earbuds. It's definitely worth a read because it's nice to hold the prayers and practices in your hand.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. This review was my own, honest opinion.

Emily's clear, calm pastoring has been a gift to me since I started listening to her podcast last year. She's a beautiful speaker and writer.

Cannot recommend highly enough. Re-listening to the audiobook already.

I was thrilled to get my hands on Emily P. Freeman's newest book. In a world of loud, often angry people, it is great to hear from a quieter soul who speaks lovingly and encouragingly. Her book is full of practical strategies that the reader can implement immediately.
Her book makes remarks on the decision making process that I continue to ruminate over such as: "We make better decisions by making decisions, not by thinking about making decisions." Freeman also gently nurtures the reader to listen to their own voice and God's voice, before turning to other voices, which is important to consider in this digital age.
For me, the most helpful question she posed is one I want to remember to consider the next time an opportunity comes before me: "If you were in a room of people and this was called out into the crowd, would you raise your hand to volunteer for this?"

It is well-written and likely good for the right person, but I am not in a place right now for this book on decision-making or for its very religious themes.
Emily P. Freeman has spoken peace into my chaos for years through her books, podcast, and blog. Her tag line, “creating space for your soul to breathe so you can discern your next right thing,” is more than just a marketing pitch. She has a way with words that speak truth through story, those which help us to find the meaning and purpose of our lives. I loved this book as much as the podcast on which it is based, and both have been my comforting companions as I seek my own next right thing.
