I liked this book but there were too many names and iterations of those names and no rhyme or reason when we used first name or last name. I often was getting people mixed up because she used so many names for one person. I liked the story and a different take on WWII, and shipping the Jewish kids other places. Gertie has been through a lot and it is easy to love her, Hedy and Gertie start off indifferent from each other. Which is understandable since Hedy left her whole family behind and doesn't know if she will ever see her again. Elizabeth and Billy were two of my favorite characters, Billy is so cute and noble. The whole town comes together multiple times and finding the light in the war was needed. I would totally read again.

It starts slow, picks up a little about 1/3 through, but it maintains a slower pace pretty much the whole time.
It’s more of a reflective storytelling than any sort of action depiction (other than a scene or two).
Upon further reflection, in a way this may be a more accurate depiction of living through a war than some other historical fictions for that very reason- it’s capturing how one exists through a time of chaos and upheaval. Those quiet moments are what we must do to keep on keeping on when the world feels like it’s burning around us.
