This book has completely broken my heart. The most devastating heart-wrenching book I've ever read. This is by far the most I have ever cried at a book. Holy moly.
Betty is like A Little Life but without the sadism and exploitation from the author - I can just about cope with this level of gut stabbing grief because the book had so much heart and was so beautiful. You will feel the kind of utter destruction of grief that makes you think about your family, childhood, trauma, and death (all the best topics), in such a complex way.
Brb just texting my therapist.

Stunning prose -I've never saved so many quotes from one book. Every page is gorgeous. Landon Carpenter has instantly become one my favorite literary fathers, a god to Betty and to me. McDaniel's The Summer That Melted everything was exceptional, and this follow up is phenomenal and worth the wait.

one of my favourite reads of all time. Wow pure poetry and just completely stunning and life changing. So so beautiful that Landon’s legacy will live on forever in what felt like a religious read, reminding you of the purpose of life and love and living and breathing and existing. What a love letter to her grandad and her mum, Betty. Wow ! I will talk about this book forever!

Phenomenal. I just... Damn. What a tremendous book.
A heart-breaking take on girlhood.
An inspirational drama on paternal love.
A sweeping Appalachian family tale steeped generational trauma rooted in racism, homophobia, and sexual violence.
Often hard to read. Impossible to put down.
