I've read reviews noting sexism and racism, but I read a horror novel true to its form. Hendrix holds a critical lens up to American society as many have before him, delving into issues of gender, race, wealth and privilege.

Should have checked the content warning before reading. There are extremely graphic rape/sexual assault scenes near the end of the book. I wish the book itself had a content warning up top.

Wow.   I had high hopes, but it went down hill fast.   Besides needing a huge trigger warning for sexual assault and domestic violence- the deep misogyny made it hard to get through it.   Idk what I was expecting but it wasn’t this.

I loved the set up, I liked the writing style, but I had a lot of issues with how this resembled more a screenplay than a novel.

I wasn't fond of the ghost either.

Edited after looking at other reviews here: I'm very confused as to what people consider a "diverse cast". The cast here is specifically and deliberately not diverse. They are all around the same age, white, able-bodied SAHMs (presumed straight). One major side character is not white. Don't pick this up if you want a diverse cast.
