This book left me in awe. Emotionally packed to the brim, heartbreaking while still somehow hopeful for the human race. I will be convincing everyone I know to read this book, and I look forward to reading more of Akwaeke Emezi’s work

Oh boy, what a great story, what a beautifully-written book, what wonderful symbolism. The book feels mysterious but familiar at the same time, and I absolutely loved the main characters and how full and real the cast felt. The themes were heavy, and the allegory of seen things versus unseen things and the terrifying climax really left me reeling. I enjoyed this book, and I will read this book again. Only thing holding me back from that full 5th star is my selfish wish for more--this book went by so fast for me. I want more of Jam's family, of the fun and love between Bitter and Aloe and Jam. I want more of the good and more of the friendship and more paranormal and world-building and lore....but I think the fact that we got what we got is beautiful too. I'll for sure be thinking about this one for a long time.

are monsters under your bed, or just hiding in plain sight?

such an impactful and important read about seeing past the mundane illusions that in-denial societies have set and addressing abuse in all its horrifying, oftentimes deceitful visages. i am astounded by how thought-provoking, profound, and heartbreaking this novella was, how excellent and diverse the representation of identity was written, and how for a limited number of pages, it was able to effectively unpack and discuss heavy topics without being too explicit. i absolutely loved the whimsical language and prose; i grew attached to the main characters—jam, pet, and redemption—and it's silly but i want to protect them; and i appreciated the metaphors of good/angels and bad/monsters, knowing that this could be easily read and interpeted by younger readers. i just know that i will still spend time thinking about this on the days to come—in fact, this story and its messages will certainly stay with me forever.

Lucille seems like a utopia where all the monsters have been put away and all the citizens support each other. I wish everyone could have support like the main character Jam’s parents who, when she spoke for the first time when she was three to express hatred for being called a cute boy, immediately and happily helped her transition to be who she really is. However, this clever little book explores how everything is not as simple as that. Jam only has a conception of angels as the saviours who purified Lucille, but when she does some research she finds that angels can look horrifying, and monsters can look harmless.

When Jam accidentally unleashes a creature from her mother’s canvas, she is pushed to find the monster hiding in her best friend’s house. I like the way Pet talks with repetitive alliterative words. Maybe it’s just the way Pet is performed in the audiobook, but it really gave me the same vibes as the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland. I also adore Redemption, Jam’s best friend, and his intense emotions.

A final thing I appreciated in this book was the inclusion of Jam’s selective mutism and the support everyone from her friend to her parents to her librarian gave her by signing to her when she wished to do that rather than to speak.

Very interesting concept and the writing was unlike anything I had read before. This might also be the most diverse book I've ever read.
