In a city without monsters, Jam meets a creature (Pet) whose mission is to hunt the monster in her best friend's house.

I enjoyed reading this book. The plot was simple adn easy to follow, yet there is so much social commentary imbued in its story.
The diversity of the characters is so exciting:
  • a trans protagonist who is living in a world where she doesn't face violence and transphobia
  • characters of varying abilities (e.g. a wheelchair user, the protagonist regularly using sign language for communication)
  • a character with 3 parents (one of whom uses they/them pronouns)
  • all of the characters are (implicitly and explicitly) Black but not having to face racism as a plot point

A view of society post-revolution and what is means to be good or bad in a binary sense, whether you are a monster or not in Lucille. Reading this is like reading a fable: it achieves its purpose i teaching a moral lesson, but with its focus on plot the characters and their relationships don't feel as emotionally fleshed out as they could be.
