I respect the author for taking her time to write a masterpiece on a topic you don’t see often in fantasy books or books in general.

(Their names are just words) it took the author 13 years to write this 12 chapter novel on rape. Moss was only a child r-worded by his uncle Hibiscus. And Glass did nothing even when she knew. It took Jam with a loving family and friend Redemption to clear out the monster. Of course with Pet help to punish(blind) Hibiscus with the face of justice. And so justice finally happened. Indeed Pet is a real angel.

This book was not at all what I expected! And the writer did that really good. 
It's about people. Not monsters. But people because people are monsters. And I just love the whole concept so much! This book makes you rethink everything.

The prose was beautiful - such a joy to read Emezi’s sentences. The cast was maybe the most diverse I’ve ever seen, in a way that seemed refreshingly taken for granted. The themes of police/prison abolition, societal truth-telling, and punishment very much interest me but are so rarely tackled by novelists, especially in a YA context, so huge points to Emezi for that. I had prepared myself for a different kind of ending than I got - I found that it made the book’s message a bit murky. Still, there were so many beautiful gems throughout the book that it makes me so excited to read the prequel and hopefully more books in this universe!
