Desde el l inicio se conoce quién es el criminal, y la trama es algo sosa, sin nada de suspenso.

I really wanted to love this book because of how much I love Morbid & Alaina’s storytelling abilities on the podcast, but it didn’t live up to my expectations :/

I read another review that said this novel felt like a first draft that needed to still be fleshed out into a fully story — and I completely agree. The short sentences and super short chapters made it feel choppy, although the chapter length did keep the pace moving quickly and I kept turning the pages nonetheless.

I was very surprised by the twist at first, but then I tried to connect everything and felt like it didn’t really make sense. I didn’t really get to know the characters enough to connect with them, either. I also felt like there were quite a few random mentions of serial killers & other true crime stories thrown in that didn’t flow with the plot/context?

I definitely wanted to keep reading this book & I finished it because I was intrigued by the plot! But overall, I think this could’ve been written MUCH better and fleshed out into a more in-depth story, because the premise is definitely promising.

This book was incredibly eerie & captivating, I just found myself getting confused at times but it may just be user error.

The Butcher and the Wren is a split perspective thriller posing Dr. Wren Muller, a medical examiner, against a brutal killer at large in New Orleans. With mysterious clues and an ever growing death toll, the clock is ticking to find the Bayou Butcher.

I wanted to like this book, but unfortunately there were a lot of issues that I couldn't overlook.

The pacing was strange, with clipped chapters and oddly timed plot twists that caused them to lose their payoff. There was also relatively little tension built during the investigation stage of the story, which is necessary in a successful thriller.

The descriptions of New Orleans read like a brochure at a tourist attraction, relying heavily on cliche and the reader never setting foot in the city.

The characters are extremely flat, being given very little face time or development. Additionally, the clever medical examiner main character feels like a strange self-insert (especially because of the author's own backround as an autopsy tech).

Ultimately The Butcher and the Wren is a sloppily executed plot in a setting that quickly becomes a caricature of itself.

I have a feeling the ending is a setup for a series (or at least one sequel), but the execution of this one makes me uninterested in a followup.

If you're a fan of Alaina or of the Morbid podcast, read this book. If you're anyone else, there are much better thrillers out there.
