I always find Moshfegh's writing compelling, even when I'm not particularly enjoying the book. The same was true here, but I struggled more as I wasn't always sure what was going on. We have the most unreliable of unreliable narrators in McGlue as he is an alcoholic with a serious brain injury, and the story swings from present to memory to hallucination without it always being clear which we're currently in. But I'm glad I persevered as it did start coming together for me.

reading this book made me feel like i was back at the very first time i got drunk to the point of blackout and i hated that feeling because it’s one of the many traumas i have that i didn’t want to relive

as always i love how ottessa humanises horrible characters, however, there’s just too many slurs here that you will end up saying “is this really necessary to the whole story?” and the answer is always no

do i recommend this? no, not at all, i’m glad i read this but there was a reason why i didn’t want to read it back during the time that i was sooooo obsessed with moshfegh’s writing
