I am torn on how to rate this one.

Let me preface by saying that I do not really read that much mystery thriller. But then I really wouldn’t call this a mystery. The book started excellent for me with the prologue being intriguing enough to make me want to read more. The protagonist is the son of a convicted murderer, spending the last seven years in hiding as the brand of being a murderer’s son pursues him. After being shuttled between different relatives, he ends up staying with Mr. Ahn, a key player on the events that happened seven years ago. After certain events that happen in the present that is again threatening their anonymity, Mr. Ahn disappears and Sowon is sent a box of manuscript that basically tells the whole story of what happened seven years ago.

This is where the book lost me. I get the whole novel within a novel. But after learning the story, I don’t understand why Sowon was kept in the dark about what his father did and did not do. In the novel that Mr. Ahn wrote, it was quite obvious who the villain is. Even the job of that person was a giveaway. This guy was basically scum of the earth. So what was the point of the other 200 pages of the book.

I guess I was not prepared for it to be a character study of everyone else but the main character. And for character studies, I feel like the women characters are so poorly fleshed out that I am surprised that this was written by a woman. I also do not understand the whole plan in the end. With the amount of evidence they had against the guy, why not go to the police and just catch him. The guy was even going to prison every week to visit the father. Like I understand the whole father confessing to everything to protect his son. But the guy did not feel all that powerful to me, he just felt like a douche, to be honest. And if it’s because they did not even know he was alive, why confess to everything then?

The writing is good. The author is quite well known in South Korea and I think she deserves that renown. But this book was not for me.
