I prefer the first part over the second (unfinished) one, love how Gogol describes and introduces every character...just sometimes he slightly overdoes it
تدور أحداث هذه الرواية في زمن كان النظام الساري في العمالة في الأراضي الزراعية فيه هو نظام القنانة , و معنى القنّ في اللغة هو "العَبْدُ الذى كان أَبوه مملوكًا لمواليه" , ففي هذا النظام , يكون العبد أو القن ليس مملوكاً بذاته لصاحب الأرض , بل يكون عمله في الأرض مملوكاً لصاحبها.
في هذه الرواية , يقوم أصحاب الأراضي بدفع ضرائب على الأقنان, و التي يتم عدّها و جردها كل عشر سنين , و في حال مات أحد هذه الأقنان , فإنه يعتبر حياً في الدولة لحين الجرد القادم.
بطل الرواية يدعى تشيتشيكوف , , وهو رجل فطن يستغل نظام جرد الأقنان لصالحه , فيتنقل بين ملاك الأقنان و يعرض عليهم
أن يشتري منهم الأقنان أو الأنفس الميتة و يريحهم من عبء دفع الضرائب على أقنان ميتة لا يستفيدون منها لغرضٍ في نفسه هو , لا يعلمه ملاك الأنفس.
استمعت لهذه الرواية على قناة مزامير السيدة ميم على يوتيوب ,و برأيي كانت تجربة ممتعةً بحق. أنصح بالراوية و بقناة اليوتيوب المذكورة أيضاً .

plot was good but didn’t like his writing style as much as other russian authors
A humorous and ranging epic. Gogol dives to the heart of certain personalities and figures we encounter even today.
This is a very funny book with and intriguing plot filled with interesting and colorful characters. However it feels very disjointed. I had very high expectations for this book and was very disappointed. I felt that lots of the long winded part consisted of Gogol just liaising details that didn’t contribute much to the story. I wouldn’t recommend this to people. It’s sadly the first Russian classic I didn’t love :(

I actually didn't finish this book, but I loved reading the first half. It was a lot funnier than I expected!
