A lot of the reviews here mention that nothing happens in this book. . . and they are correct. But, that doesn't mean you shouldn't read it!
The way Gogol describes the people the main character meets makes it all worth while. Every single person he describes has an analogue in modern times. So much so that I felt I bit called out by his portrayals of a few people (like, the lazy guy who sleeps late and then rubs his eyes for an hour, which I guess is what they did before doom scrolling) -- not because his characterizations were wrong, but because they were spot on.
I didn't realize quite how unfinished this book was before I started it. If you don't like the idea of a book that ends mid-sentence, you could always just read Part I, which makes for a reasonably coherent story on its own.

Gogol è un genio.
Peccato sia incompleto e con una caduta stilistica notevole nella seconda parte.
Ma è genio, cacchio.

Well what a waste of time. Made it 168 pages in. AND NOTHING HAPPENED. He just goes around buying dead serfs’ names from landowners. Even when not doing that (like going to parties) it’s completely uninteresting. Gogol goes into painstaking detail about unimportant things that don’t advance the plot. I had to force myself to pick this up and continue reading. Not worth it. I’ll just read a summary of the ending.

I wish we had a completed and properly edited novel instead of a manuscript. Still really funny.
