I never read this book in highschool, but I'm kinda glad I didn't. Reading it now was so interesting and Nick compels me as a character, he's a genuinely nice guy who wants the people in his life to be cared for and he's well aware of the class divide between him and his friends. The dialogue is very witty and well crafted and the imagery is spectacular. Though this novel does come from a different time (some of the characters and stereotypes are uncomfortable to read) I think it's well worth the journey to reach the end.

Ashamed that it took my daughter studying this for A level to make me read this classic, but so glad I did, loved it.

Apparently I've had my copy for 50 years, which was a surprise. Sometimes books you read as a teen lose some of their lustre when you reread as an adult. This one hasn't - it's still poignant, and sad and shows how the very rich can, simply by being rich, insulate themselves from life and all its ramification.
