I do not understand why this is an American classic. Short, well written, but I don' like a "Romeo and Juliet" type of love story or so many unlikable characters.
Graphic: Death, Alcohol
Moderate: Death, Infidelity, Murder
i pinballed so hard between 1 and 4 stars on this book.
reading books with characters i find to be abhorrent is difficult for me - these people are awful. and relatable, which makes it worse! even the narrator felt insufferable.
it was the writing, and the concepts which were more appealing - descriptions, turns of a phrase, truth in the ugliness of life.

Zelda Fitzgerald I see you
i will never cease loving this book. from the first time i read it when i was 13 to now when i’m in college, i don’t think i’ll ever be able to describe how this book makes me feel. maybe it is basic to have this as one of my favorite books but the intricate details and images painted always hold a place in my heart. there is so much meaning in this fantastic novel that one cannot possibly just skim this book. the tragedy, longing for more, and loss in gatsby’s life that is so wonderfully captured in 180 pages is incredible. daisy’s self absorption and tom’s careless brutality. nick’s desolate world and jordan’s air of ignorance. these unbelievably unlikeable but loved characters make this book the masterpiece that it is

My problem with the Great Gatsby is not the story, it's the writing style. I have to admit this is the first time I read this and I haven't read anything else by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I don't know if it is just him, the time it was written, or just my preference.
That being said there are a lot of secrets and lies that take place in this book. Half truths and wandering eyes. If society was anything like this book made it out to be the "morals" that we are being pushed back into didn't exist even then. Even then everyone should have people in the end.
