This book was refreshingly good. I enjoyed how Nastasya grew and changed throughout the book. She was funny but sardonic at the beginning of the book. The growth of her character was awesome. I also liked how we saw flash backs of her past. Nastasya is an immortal, so I liked how Cate Tiernan incorporated Nastasya's past into the book so we got to know her. The readers aren't just told that Nasty was an immortal. We are shown. Granted, the flash backs did come a little too much. But I thought they were very cool, especially towards the end.
Although I did enjoy this book, there were things I didn't like about it. The rest of the characters were just...bland. I felt like I didn't get to know them as much as I knew Nasty. There was no real connection for me. I also didn't like how the magick was more like witchery and not as much immortal powers. That's just my opinion.

I really enjoyed this book. It was written so nicely. I loved Nastaya- she was one witty heroine. Her attitude towards everything was laid-back.Sometimes I felt embarrassed for her. I devoured this book and its characters. I love the cover, too.
The book started with a killer line. I was excited to read this. It is one of those books you go in without having any expectations whatsoever but the minute you read it, you are like '...Whoa, why didn't I read this before?..'
Now, let's talk about the plot. It had a very good plot- a very good story line with strong characters. I seriously felt afraid of Incy.
The story follows Nastaya, an immortal girl four hundred and fifty years old who spends all of her time partying with her friends Incy, Kate and Boz. She finds herself awakening from her daily stupor when Incy cripples a cabbie for mere reasons. She flees from her friends and Incy and takes shelter with a woman named River whom she met in the 1920's. River's Edge is a special home for people like her trying to find some rightness in their lives. She struggles daily trying to find herself and what she really wants with her life. She struggles to the point that she leaves River's Edge only to come back to really try this time. There is something really important about Nastasya- she is the sole heiress of one of the most powerful magical family. The immortals in this fantac tale are trying to rid themselves of the Terävä (darkness) and become Tähti. She faces danger to her life and she fears Incy is out to get her, She tries anyway and even gets a job and for the first ever knows contentment. She also deals with a crush for Reyn (the Viking God) with whom she shares a very heart-wrenching history. At the end she finds who really is after her and that she finally belongs somewhere.
I loved every character in this epic tale of immortality. Nastasya- Nasty to her friends was just so funny to listen to. She really wanted to be a better person. She was sweet and trying to put herself out there for others. Reyn was, well, mysterious. River and the other teachers were good to read about as well. Nell was just fake and shady. Meriwether and Dray were also good additions to Nasty's life. The emotions people felt were shown really nicely. I loved that particular vision Nasty had of Incy. That was creepy. *shudders*
When I finished reading this I was just crazy to kniow what would happen in the next boook when Incy finds her.
Recommended to every one looking for a new series to fall for.
This is the best book I've read all year and my favorite this year. I will write my review in full once I TRY to process why I liked this so much and try to be a coherent human being.

I was a huge fan of Cate Tiernan's "Sweep" series, [bc:Book of Shadows|675614|Book of Shadows (Sweep, #1)|Cate Tiernan|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1311649571s/675614.jpg|661618], so I was excited to read more work by her.
In that aspect, the book was a little disappointing. Nastasya was not a few good character. Not from the things she has done, but just not strong. It started to get better towards the end, when we learn more about Nasty's past, and learn the things she can do. But before that, it was just a lot of filler.
Just because it wasn't the greatest book I have read doesn't mean I wont continue the series! It just wont be at the top of my read next list.

A fun view on what it would be like to be immortal and how one would get desensitized to life
4.5 STARS
This book is all about the troubles that come for Nastasya in her long life. She is immortal and along the way she realizes that her life is full of darkness, so she seeks help from someone she met ages ago (literally). The book focuses on this girl who used to party and drink and hook up with anyone she could trying to become something better, and I was here for it the entire time.
I loved Nasty. I think her character was really well thought out and her character development was so unbelievable that I literally praised her by the end of this book. Her background and how it entwines with people she wouldn't even imagine is really interesting and well thought out, and her reactions to what is going on around her is very reasonable, considering the trauma of her past. Overall, I thought she was an extremely wonderful main character. I liked most of the characters and how real they felt and how well they were written.. I definitely did not expect some of the twists that came from this novel. I was not prepared for a few of the really major plot points and although I probably should have known that they were coming (they were kind of obvious), I still felt myself completely enamored by them and just blown away by each new twist and turn. I loved the writing of Cate Tiernan. I think my favourite parts of the book were the parts where Nasty was doing her internal reflection and thoughts, in other words, no dialogue (and you will never catch me saying that that's my favourite part of a book ever again). It was funny, heart-wrenching, sad, and hopeful all at once and I appreciated it a lot.
One thing I didn't like about the book, which is why it is only 4.5 stars, is the amount of characters. It became hard for me to keep track of them (which may sound really stupid), but I genuinely couldn't remember all of the minor characters, like Lorenz or Charles or Rachel. Other than that, this book was really stellar. Props to Cate for making a series that is actually soul crushing and beautiful all at once. I just got the rest of the books in the mail, so as soon as I log off, you bet I will be reading them. I can't wait to see what the future holds for Nasty, Reyn, River, etc.

I even liked Nell although she may take the award for being the bitchiest character I've read about in 2017One thing I didn't like about the book, which is why it is only 4.5 stars, is the amount of characters. This book was really good! I absolutely loved it even though it took me awhile to get into. It took me about the first 200 pages just to actually get into it. I think she gave to much information in the beginning with bringing in so many characters at once which was kinda overwhelming. Other than that, this book was really good. I definitely recommend this to anyone who loved Sweep!
