I enjoy reading this every year as an Advent calendar. It's not stunning, but it's sweet.

This was a really cute little advent calendar based mystery, and felt quite festive. The premise is great.

By the last third, I felt a little preached-to, and there was a fair bit of repetition each 'day'. Some characters didn't have any impact on the story at all, and some of the little details felt lost.

Still, I enjoyed it all the same.

I was quite disappointed in The Christmas Mystery. I read Sophie's World a number of years ago, and loved it. For years I tried to get a copy of The Christmas Mystery, but couldn't. Finally, I came across a copy and was really looking forward to diving in.

The story is just lack-luster. I kept trying to blame it on the translation, but that wasn't it. The book is extremely cyclical, a bit repetitive, but really, it just doesn't go anywhere and the "mystery" is weak. It took to nearly the end for me to even figure out what the mystery was, and by that time, I just didn't really care. So when the end came and the mystery was solved, I was just reading because I don't like not finishing books. I do not recommend The Christmas Mystery at all.

My 2006 thoughts:

Ï read this one as a kind of advent calender this year. There's twenty-four chapters, each relating to a door in the calender in the book. It's a nice story, would be good for kids at christmas. Perhaps slightly too religious for me, and it's nowhere near as good as Sophie's World, but still a pretty good book.

Boring, annoyingly repetitive, and too religious. Besides, there was not much of a mystery there. I may not be the suitable audience for this book , though: I can imagine it to be a great read for children (under 12 would be my rough guess) with religious upbringing and dislike for too much suspense and thrill.

I loved this book. It was beautiful, unusual and had me thinking deeply about Christmas and caring for one another
