Dystopian with a twist.
As I read this, I kept thinking I've read it before.

Fiiiniiiii !! C'est long, très long ! J'ai mis une éternité à le lire, car en plus je le lisais en lecture secondaire. Mais c'était passionnant. Pas toujours égal peut-être mais l'ensemble m'a gardée captivée ! Et cette fin !! Aaaaah !! Il me faut la suite !!
I loved this book but the sequels were far too bloated and unsatisfying.

Really enjoyed this book, well written, unique idea. Reminded me a lot of the 'The Stand'. The only disappointment for me was the way everything concluded without an apparent struggle. It may redeem itself yet as there are other books in the series.
Whew. I downloaded this book to only satisfy my curiosity about the hype and I'm emerging 15 days later breathless and wide-eyed. I need to preface this by saying that I'm not a zombie or vampire kind of person. I usually don't go for people-vs-monster, guns!-blood!-protect-the-women-and-children! kind of novels. But this was fun. It's a solid journey right from the beginning where it all began, in shady military operations dabbling in biological weapons, to the fall of civilisation (how I love that phrase, sends chills up my spine), to the post-apocalyptic wasteland where people ride horses instead of drive vehicles and communities are holed up behind guarded walls and the lights are never turned off at night.
What I loved about this novel is that it explores and expands on many different characters or timelines or places and it takes bits of that to perfect the novel's worldbuilding. I find myself immersed in a completely different world through the eyes of very well-developed characters. Cronin really puts effort into writing characters, even side characters or minor characters, and I find myself resonating with little details, such as how Rachel Wood went completely insane and attacked Anthony Carter, and how he remembered she was pulling him down when she was drowning. Did she want to drown? Why did she lose her mind for no reason? Or how Cronin lets you speculate, and through that he makes you appreciate the complexity and elusiveness of human nature and how you can never fully understand it. I appreciated that.
Cronin also varies his scenes and it keeps up your interest - he explores the story through human experience through the eyes of the humans themselves, short landscape descriptions, or vampire activity while taking on the voice of an omniscient narrator, and he also uses flashbacks, diaries, and dreams to aid his narration. All these ties in to furthering the story and none of it felt forced or redundant.
I loved the straightforward, unassuming, yet graceful and poetic writing style Cronin has and I enjoy reading him. I gave the book 4 stars because I thought the story could still be told if Cronin shaved off a hundred or so pages; there are extraneous scenes, and although they were good scenes, I felt slightly tired reading such a long book and I actually put it down for about 5 days. But I really enjoyed it overall. Yay to exciting epics!
