To much information for side characters that will literally be killed off in 20 pages. I neither want nor need that kind of useless filler information that won’t help move the story along. He had a good idea for a story, but lost the plot along the way.

So surprised by this book. The description I heard on NPR was The Stand or The Road with vampires. Which is kind of accurate (I haven't read either books but from what I understand of them, it's partially accurate). Without going into too much of the plot or even the structure, what separates this from a lot of other post-apocalyptic stories is that they spend a significant amount of time setting up what is going to happen before it happens and then trying to piece together all that happened between the calamity and decades afterwards. Writing from one character's perspective and making them feel real and believable is something it's easy to take for granted, but it's actually pretty difficult to do. Doing that with multiple points of view and making it work as in this case, that's impressive and very engaging from a reader's perspective. The use of diary entries and correspondence is something that can be used very effectively or it can be cheesy and forced. In this case it was the former. The mix of fantasy and realism in this book is really satisfying, it kept me off balance.
I should warn that both this and the sequel The Twelve have violence against women and sexual violence though the latter is not described in graphic detail. If those things are upsetting to you to the point where you can't enjoy the book, I would recommend avoiding this trilogy.

This book gave me nightmares. I loved it. It's supposed to be the first in a trilogy. I live in fear that the author will die before he finishes it.

I had absolutely no idea what this book was about when I picked it up. Turns out, it's a well written epic, dystopian, monster story. Win all around!
