Not my usual type of book, but I was hooked from page 1. Excellent novel of hope over adversity.
I started reading this because of the show that just started, but the book just reminds me too much of The Walking Dead, which I could never get into. It's just too much death and destruction. I need to read something happy now.

I enjoyed reading "The Passage," though it took me a while to get through it. The beginning did a good job hooking the reader in. The latter half of the book felt rushed rushed at times. And though the book has a supernatural, mystical theme, there are too many instances where it seems the author calls readers to suspend belief, and uses chance to save characters or tie loose ends where "no one knows how it happened."
Despite the miraculous saves, it's a book worth reading.

I'd rather give it four and a half stars, but they don't have that option here. Gripping read at times, and usually well-written, though it has some perplexing moments and some plot points I don't quite buy. I'll still check out the sequel when it comes out in paperback.

Loved it. I was engrossed for all 766 pages. Best book I've read all summer.
Too busy... Took me a while to read this one... The ending took me by surprise; can't be that bleak though as this is the first of a trilogy.
That I read this book in the midst of a pandemic made it much more scary. Especially in the early sections, where it is much more salient that vampirism is caused by and spreading like a virus, I found myself thinking of our present world through the dark lens of Cronin's much more devastating virus. It brought up questions of meaning in life, what it means to go on living through world-changing events, and whether "good" intentions can ever be considered enough. It's dark.
But even through the darkness of this book, the relationships between our characters bring joy. While it's never certain that your friends will live, that anyone will live, the depth of each character and their connections with each other are heartwarming. Everyone is redeemable. Everyone. They have goals, and motivations, and their drive in such a dark time is something to aspire to.
As hard as this was to read at points, that was only ever because of the content. The writing, the plot, and the interweaving character lines were stellar. I'm looking forward to reading the second!

Great post apocalyptic book! A bit slow going at times and pretty long, but worth it. I think the second one will be even better as this one sort of set up the action. Humans find a virus that makes people into vampires, it goes rogue and the world (or at least the us) falls into chaos. The story starts at present day as the virus is developed and then spreads, then skips to 100 years in the future to the survivors. One girl who was infected with the final version of the virus is not a vampire but is basically immortal and on the humans side, and she will be the one to save them all. I love imagining the apocalypse and this gave lots of great description of what it would be like 100 years in the future. A little bit of 'higher power' premonition stuff which isn't my favorite but it's pretty light and didn't feel religious.
