I was impressed reading Amy's book. I expected a series of funny essays, which we got, but she took the time to dedicate pages to issues that are important to her. This approach can come across as preachy, but I feel like Amy did it in digestible way that reflected herself.
Enjoyed the middle/end much more than the beginning. Audio was fantastic - I wouldn't have liked the book version as much.
Let me begin by saying that I never personally read books written by comedians, I always get the audiobook read by the author. I am a firm believer that memoirs or essays written by comedians need to also be read by said comedian; otherwise, it will never measure up to our expectations.
That being said, I absolutely loved this book. While there were one or two parts that kind of bored me (like tips for comedians starting out -- I am definitely not a comedian), I could look past that because the rest of the book was hilarious (I literally was laughing out loud at parts) and provided me with a new perspective on Amy Schumer.
A couple things I particularly loved about this book:
1. In one of the first few chapters, she talks about how she is an introvert. For many personal reasons, I absolutely was able to connect to the way she discussed the emotions and self-care associated with being an introvert. Much of her discussion are things I have felt and struggled with myself and to hear that she implemented many techniques that I have myself, honestly, made me want to send her a letter and personally thank her for that chapter. (Which I literally tried to look up how to do that as soon as the chapter was over...) So, thanks, Amy.
2. Like her stand-up routines, she talks about what is typically considered taboo. I love her honesty about her sexual relations and the language she uses to describe its beauty. I love that she addresses her own experience with an abusive relationship -- an experience many women face, yet feel like they have to hide. I love that she talks about loving your body and standing up for yourself and who you are. Much of what she discusses are things I have also faced in my own life and her book provided solidarity, strength, and courage. I have so much more respect for Amy after reading this book and think what she stands for is incredible.
“I know my worth. I embrace my power. I say if I'm beautiful. I say if I'm strong. You will not determine my story. I will. I'll speak and share and fuck and love, and I will never apologize for it. I am amazing for you, not because of you. I am not who I sleep with. I am not my weight. I am not my mother. I am myself. And I am all of you.”

I enjoyed listening to Amy Schumer's story. I think the audio is probably a better way to get the true depiction of this book. Really good listen. I have only watched her comedy, which I enjoy, and did not know much about her life, worth the audio listen.

i thought this book was just going to be strictly comedy, but i’m pleasantly surprised that it got serious at times
Thank you, Amy. For speaking out loud the very things that so many woman struggle to say. And thank you for the laughs. I will never forget the image of you shampooing the bald man’s single patch of hair when you were a shampoo girl. May we all strive to not give a shit about the things that don’t matter and give a whole lot more shits about the things that do.
This was a surprisingly insightful book. (I expected it to be interesting, and it did not disappoint on that count.) Amy is smart (not surprised about that) and also wise (a little surprised about that, honestly, but only because of what we see of her persona as a celebrity). She writes fearlessly about her life and the people in her life, and, as a total coward when it comes to sharing that stuff publicly, I totally admire that.
Listened via Audible. Amy narrates the audiobook, as most comedians do with their own books, so that was a major plus. This was a very funny account of Amy's life and whatnot. She's a great writer, and obviously a great narrator, and I was definitely laughing a lot throughout this. I guess this style of book isn't really my favorite, but it's nice to have some easy/light-hearted every once in a while. Which, now that I think of it, this wasn't really light-hearted, there were some tough/uncomfortable stories to hear, but Amy does a great job of telling them, and bringing some humor to it as she does. Overall a good book!
Loved learning about Amy Schumer’s life, as always so candid and honest with her life experiences. Loved that she has her principles and issues that’s she wants to discuss and doesn’t shy away from them. Amy Schumer is an awesome lady and definitely enjoyed the book!
