*Note: I listened to the audio book of this.
I like this way more than I expected to, and it was far more insightful, emotionally resonant, and serious than I had expected.
I've always been a fan of Amy Schumer. Some of her humor is too shock-valuey and unnecessarily vulgar, but overall, I've always identified with her. So I picked this book up hoping for a light, funny read the way that many comedy sets are full of pithy observations about life. The book definitely has a lot of that -- you can't take the comedian out of the writer -- but it also delves into a history of verbal and emotional abuse that she suffered at the hand of many boyfriends, her dad's devastating battle with MS, the toxic relationship with her mother, and her sexual assault.
Oof. Way heavier than anticipated. But also much deeper and satisfying than anticipated as well.
The first chapters, I wasn't convinced that this was going to be very compelling, but then it sucked me in and I pretty much listened to it whenever I had a chance.
This book contains one of the saddest stories I've ever heard about her alcoholic/MS-ridden father. It was almost unbearable to hear. But she tells it with empathy.
This also contains a very scary domestic abuse story, and a few other abuse-related stories, so if those are triggers for you, be warned.
Very enjoyable. Very relatable. Very insightful. Smart, funny, no holds barred, truthful, painful. I would definitely read another memoir (I'm hoping she writes one about her marriage to an autistic chef).

not as LOL funny as i expected, but she writes how she talks --- the jokes kind of slip in the middle of her sentences and surprise you. i bet this is excellent on audio book. her family life was fascinating and i think she did a great job of explaining how humor can be the best response to tragedy...it's okay to laugh because sometimes that's all you can do! in books like these i always want to hear more about the fame stuff (that's the us weekly reader in me) so i wanted to know more about her show, etc. but all her childhood stories gave me a really good picture of who amy is. strong 3+...might have been more had i not recently finished [b:You'll Grow Out of It|27170141|You'll Grow Out of It|Jessi Klein|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1462261735s/27170141.jpg|47207022] (who writes for amy's show) and felt it was funnier/better written with lots of similar topics.
Amy Schumer is very funny and this book made me laugh and want to drink wine with her. But it also made me feel empowered. She has such self-confidence and a good attitude about her mistakes. A cynic might say that it is easy when you have millions and a tv show, but she feels real. And I want to thank her because since ending her book, I have been less hard on myself.
I love Amy Schumer and everything she stands for, but the book was kind of all over the place. I do recommend it if you're a fan of Amy though! You really get to know her a little bit better!
Inspiring and funny. I loved the real feel of this book. Amy is standing up for any one who has ever felt less than perfect. She gives us permission to just BE. Dumbass tattoos and all.
I typically like Amy Schumer, but as an avid reader, I was hoping that I'd be laughing the entire time.
I did really enjoy her candor, but it just wasn't for me. If you think you're going to laugh throughout, you're probably going to be disappointed. This is very much an open book about her life and experiences, and I can definitely respect that.
I guess just don't have too high of expectations.

het boek is eigenlijk een korte biografie over een deel van Amy haar leven ook al wil ze het zo niet noemen de biografie is geschreven op de zelfde manier alsof ze een show zou geven met al haar gedachten in geschreven.
I didn't love it, I didn't hate it. It's what I expected and nothing more. I think her stories are much funnier when told on stage, but it was interesting getting to know the woman who has helped make so many women feel more comfortable about their sexuality and their own skin, regardless of her intentions.
