I wasn't expecting to like this book as much as I did. The writing is clear and the novellas are generally well-paced. This collection really focused on the darkness of patriarchal control on (fairly undeveloped) women who fall under the control of terrible men.

I very much enjoyed the first novella in this collection, "The Fox", but did not enjoy the other two nearly as much.

Scottish officer, Captain Alexander Hepburn's involvement in the war has convinced him that human life is of very little value. German aristocrat, Countess Johanna zu Rassenflow, "Hannele," is captivated by Hepburn nonetheless, and as they journey together toward their ambiguous conclusion, the dehumanizing effects of war are made clear.
