Readers should know going into this book, it is more of a history of the inner workings and bureaucracy (wow took me so long to spell that) of the Israeli occupation government and how occupation and oppression has been planned to the minute detail. It is less about the Palestinians and their experience. Pappé does state this in the beginning and makes it clear.
It was a challenging read for me since the it was a lot of inner bureaucratic terms and data. To be honest, I did skim many sections of this. I would not recommend this to someone who is beginning their journey to learn more about Palestine, but would recommend this to someone who is well-versed in political knowledge and already has a decent grasp of the main points of Palestine and it’s quest for liberation.

The monstrous mega-prison Israel contemplated in 1963, and then built in 1967, is fifty years old as this book comes to a close. The third generation of inmates are still there waiting for the world to acknowledge their suffering and to realize that, as long as their oppression continues, it will be impossible to engage constructively with oppression elsewhere in the Middle East, and in particular in Syria. The immunity Israel has received over the last fifty years encourages others, regimes and oppositions alike, to believe that human and civil rights are irrelevant in the Middle East. The dismantling of the mega-prison in Palestine will send a different, and more hopeful, message to everyone living in this troubled part of the world.

This book is often very dry, but it should be required for anyone who wants to comment on the tensions in the Middle East where Israel is a concerned party. This book details Israeli political plans and attitudes towards Palestinian lands and people from 1947 onwards and provides context for today’s current climate between the colonial state of Israel and the indigenous populations of Palestine.
Graphic: Child abuse and Police brutality
Minor: Physical abuse, Hate crime, Violence, Islamophobia, Genocide, Colonisation, Religious bigotry, Murder, Gun violence, Forced institutionalization, Child death, Torture, and War
