While I’ve read and taught many of his stories, this is the first Stephen King book I’ve ever read. There was a ridiculous amount of background and buildup (like 200 pages!), but in the end it was worth it since it made you really understand and feel for the characters. The horror itself was more about the family dynamic and of a drunken and abusive father than the actual hotel, but it wove both these terrors beautifully and tragically together. I zipped through the last 100 pages or so, afraid to of putting the book down and not knowing what would happen to Danny and Wendy. Overall, it was a solid read and I am looking forward to seeing where he takes Danny’s character in Doctor Sleep.
