As always, Stephen King's writing is perfect. But I just didn't LOVE this book. I liked it, but I don't get why people call it King's best. Maybe it's just not my type. I prefer when the villain comes from someone's insides, rather than from fantastic external sources.

My FIRST Stephen King novel!!
I've been trying to read this book for 2 YEARS now and I always start, get too bored, and forget about it.
I thought however - surely there has to be a reason why EVERYONE loves it, so I made myself finish it this 3rd time around aaaaaaaand .... I DID!
Waste of my time.
REPETITIVENESS and UNNECESSARY INFORMATION
It would have been a good story if not for all the constant repetitive thoughts of the characters. We understand what all of them struggle with, but we don't need to be reminded in every single chapter with a page-long thought. And of course - the constant unnecessary information:
Do I care about Route 36 and Route 7? no. Did this information give us any insight into the book? no.
Will I forget it the second I finish this review? yes.
REDRUM
I literally got spoiled by the cover of the book that. If I hadn't been spoiled however, I am sure I would have been severely disappointed. So much build-up of this word only for it to mean such a simple thing. I was really hoping it would be some kind of hint as to what is in the hotel or how to find help or something.
THE ENDING
We waited for 550 pages (forgive me if I'm not completely correct on the count, I read it on Kindle) just for
However, let me at least mention the things I liked:
● Exploring the characters' problems - If it wasn't so repetitive, I would've really appreciated the background stories and the dive into the characters' problems such as alcoholism, anger management issues, etc.
● The story itself - I know it's not the most innovative concept, but it still intrigued me greatly, even though I thought the ending wasn't that well done
Will I read another Stephen King book? Yes.
I trully believe this may be because this is one of his older books (published 1977) and I still want to see what all the fuss is about so I will definitely try one of his newer books.
Any suggestions are welcomed :)

There was more bad luck waiting for him at the Route 36 entrance ramp, the Denver-Boulder turnpike, also goes west to Estes Park, where it connects with Route 7. That road, also known as the Upland Highway, goes through Sidewinder, passes the Overlook Hotel, and finally winds down the Western Slope and into Utah.

A fast and compelling read, "The Shining" is probably one of the better "beach reads" I have gone through. If you are looking for a page turning, psychological thriller I would recommend. If you are looking for something stimulating in writing style, content, and or generally challenging....I would look elsewhere. I have to give King props on his insane productivity...go king go.
