I like Lovelace’s work, but this just wasn’t my favorite.  I wish there was more consistent and vivid imagery in the metaphors.  Most of the meanings behind each poem was spoon-fed to the reader.  There was just nothing new added to the concept of the collection.  It wasn’t bad, but I can’t say it was necessarily good either.  I would look into a different series of hers if this is your first introduction to her work.  Even if you have read her work before, most of what is sprinkled through her other collections is in this one; the only thing that is added is a bit more vulnerability about herself to the readers, which is a good thing, but still wasn’t enough to introduce anything new to the conversation.  If this is your first poetry collection that dives deep into a toxic/abusive romantic relationship, then it’ll definitely resonate more with you.
