I love how spooky and dark this was! I recommend it for spooky season this year for sure!
Jess is a compelling protagonist. Imperfect, determined, brave.
This Malaysian dark fantasy novel has deep roots in history, folklore, spirituality, and queer experiences.
Ah Ma and Jess' unconventional, claustrophobic, dynamic relationship was my favourite aspect of this. She is haunted and possessed by her funny, wise, cutthroat grandmother and they use this time to bond, learn, grow. Unwind the cycle of grief, pain, and trauma.

One of the best books I’ve read - incredibly written, a beautiful and intriguing story with a plot that keeps you guessing. 
I do want to explain one content warning (not a spoiler, not really) - I tagged it as graphic for sexual assault because there is an attempted rape scene. Nothing actually happens, but the scene is graphic enough particularly in descriptions of thoughts and emotions that it may be upsetting if this is a topic that is triggering to you.

Jess, while a lot of it is not her fault, does spend more of this book doing stupid shit and nearly getting murked than I had fun reading. The resolution made me see what the author was aiming for with this book, but I can tell I'm not the target audience for stories exploring these kinds of family dynamics.
