It took me a while to get into this, but whether that was due to the book or the fact that we were mid-house-move whilst I was reading is anyone's guess. However, it kept me up until 2:45am last night (this morning), as I just had to find out what happened to Jack!

Overall, I enjoyed it (which is handy because I was lucky enough to have won it, and the author signed it for me!), and it reminded me a lot of Donnie Darko - as in, you're fine with it right up until the last five minutes and then you need to immediately go back and start it again now you know.

If you threw an Irvine Welsh character into a journey to disprove the supernatural, you might have Jack Sparks. As readers, we know that Sparks is dead before his book even begins, which sets up a nice frame story. How much can we trust Jack or Alistair, who has released the book after his brother's untimely death? As Jack's ego is stripped away and he becomes more forthcoming, is he telling the truth or just spinning another story? His skeptical attitude and rock star swagger diffuse most of the horror from the book no matter how scary the situation, but if you can't get through a scary movie parody, this might be a bit too intense for you. I'm a horror movie buff, so I wasn't freaked out by any of the twists here but still had fun reading this, particularly when the little mysteries linked up at the end.

Holy. Fucking. Shit.

That book was dynamite. The rythm. The twisting. The turning. The characters. The most excellent double-vision when Sparks is lying or omitting stuff and another testimony explains the truth. The different voices of the different characters.

Its not perfect, im not saying that. Some explainations were a bit too simple and some were useless (theres one specifically where i was like "yeah no dude there np need to explain that, just say it is and thats it", explaining it just makes it weird) but all in all ? One of the best thrillers i read this year, maybe ever.

ARE YEW SHITTING ME?? That’s how it ends???

3.75 stars. This was a wild fkn ride. I haven’t read horror that got under my skin the way this did in a while so cheers to that. I loved how this was written and watching the descent into madness of our shitty, maybe redeemable main character. The first half was great but then it got a little Ebenezer Scrooge-y when the book kept making a point of how his selfishness was the cause of everything. I like my horror to have a bit of mystique so that lessened my enjoyment. The reveal was pretty cool but I wanted more closure than that non-ending
